Volaris to Add Tijuana Flights at OAK
New Route Sets Record for Number of Nonstop Destinations from OAK
Oakland, CA – Jan. 29, 2015 – Oakland International Airport (OAK) and Volaris Airlines have announced the expansion of Volaris’ international operations at OAK with the addition of new nonstop flights linking Oakland with Tijuana, Mexico beginning March 4, 2015.
The new route brings to 46 the number of nonstop destinations served from OAK – the highest number in its 88-year history. It also represents the airport’s eighth international destination and the sixth new route to commence in 2015 at OAK.
The new Tijuana flight joins Volaris’ existing services between OAK and Mexico City, Guadalajara, Leon and Morelia, Mexico. It also offers convenient same-carrier “in-country” connections to numerous other destinations throughout Mexico via Tijuana.
Starting March 4, Volaris will operate nonstop Flight 908 departing Tijuana International Airport (TIJ) on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 6:20 p.m. Pacific Time and arriving at OAK at 7:55 p.m. PT. The return Flight 909 will depart OAK on the same days at 9:10 p.m. PT and arrive at Tijuana at 11:40 p.m. PT.
Tijuana is the 29th largest city in the Americas and the fifth largest in Mexico. With a population of 1.8 million, it is part of the international San Diego – Tijuana metropolitan area. A leading industrial and financial center in northwestern Mexico, it is one of the fastest growing areas of the country and has a strong influence on economics, education, culture, art, and politics in the region.
“Volaris’ continuing expansion at OAK brings another new international destination to the San Francisco Bay Area, offering travelers even more access to key cities and businesses in Mexico,” said Deborah Ale Flint, Director of Aviation for Port of Oakland. “This expansion of service solidifies OAK as Volaris’ top gateway in Northern California and sets a new high for the number of nonstop destinations served from Oakland International Airport.”
Volaris, Mexico’s second largest carrier and its leading provider of low-cost full-service air transportation, began service to OAK in July 2009 and currently offers up to 16 weekly departures to Mexico. The airline operates all of its flights with a young fleet of 144-seat Airbus A319 and 172-seat A320 aircraft equipped with the latest technology, leather seating and generous leg room.
San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) opened a new extension between its Coliseum Station and a new Oakland International Airport Station on November 22, 2014.
