OAKLAND, CA – September 3, 2013 – Norwegian Air Shuttle announced new nonstop service to Oakland International Airport (OAK) from their hubs in Stockholm, Sweden and Oslo, Norway. The new flights begin in May 2014 using new state-of-the art Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft seating 291 passengers. The flights are the first-ever nonstop services offered from the two Scandinavian capitals to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Flights to Stockholm twice a week from May 3, 2014
Norwegian will operate two weekly flights between Stockholm (ARN) and Oakland-San Francisco Bay (OAK) – on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The introductory fare is $236 one way.

Flights to Oslo three times a week from May 28, 2014
Norwegian will operate three weekly flights between Oslo (OSL) and Oakland-San Francisco Bay (OAK) – on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The introductory fare is $236 one way.

Easy, efficient connections can be made from all flights to Norwegian’s extensive network of over 120 destinations in Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East.

Norwegian’s new service adds an important boost to the local economy. The direct economic impact to visitor and airport business related spending is estimated at $77 million for the first year.

“The new intercontinental flights from this growing and profitable European carrier are a significant development for the Bay Area and for OAK,” said Deborah Ale Flint, Director of Aviation for the Port of Oakland, which owns and operates Oakland International Airport. “In addition to being the preferred airport for the Bay Area savvy traveler, because of our central Bay Area location, reliability and ease of use, OAK has a long history as the base of aviation innovation. Beginning with the first transpacific flights back in 1927 to the emergence of low cost carriers in the 1990’s revolutionizing air travel by making it available to more people than ever before,” Flint added. “The next chapter of innovation, the “long distance revolution”, now begins as Norwegian brings its unique brand of low-cost, high value air travel to the San Francisco Bay Area.”

“Long-haul flying has for way too long been characterized by expensive fares and limited flexibility. The great reception Norwegian has received after launching to New York and Fort Lauderdale shows that there is a need for competitive fares from Scandinavia to the U.S. The major traffic streams currently go between the US and Europe and there’s great demand for high quality flights at a low fare between the two continents, Our entry into long-haul, intercontinental markets continues and we are pleased to launch the San Francisco Bay Area service at Oakland International Airport.” said Norwegian CEO Bjørn Kjos. “Norwegian has not only been well received by Scandinavian passengers travelling to the U.S, but also Americans going to Scandinavia and beyond,” Kjos added.

Norwegian offers a fleet of the most efficient and modern long-haul aircraft in the market. With the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Norwegian operates the newest generation of long haul aircraft, especially designed to meet the passengers’ demand for better comfort and more eco-friendly transportation. The aircraft type, which is the most cost efficient in its class, provides Norwegian with a strong competitive advantage and the passengers with low fares to distant destinations outside Europe. Onboard customers will find the latest passenger amenities including a seat back monitor with a touch-based system offering music, movies, games, inflight snacks and duty free shopping at every seat.
