Port honored for zero-emissions environmental symposium
Oakland, Calif. – November 5, 2024: The Port of Oakland was presented with an award by the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) last week at the AAPA Annual Convention & Exposition. The AAPA is the unified voice of the seaport industry in the Americas, representing more than 130 public port authorities in the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean and Latin America. The AAPA Lighthouse Awards honor outstanding port projects and the best port programs each year. The Port of Oakland received AAPA’s Award for Excellence in Community/Educational Outreach for its first-ever zero-emissions symposium, held February 7, 2024.
“Together with Port community, elected, industry, and regulatory partners, we will continue to make good on our commitment toward building a zero-emissions future,” said Port of Oakland Executive Director Danny Wan. “Our environmental symposium brought together diverse stakeholders to share innovative solutions that will ultimately deliver a cleaner and greener Oakland.”
The “Driving Innovation: Zero Emissions Oakland Symposium” (Symposium) brought together maritime, aviation, commercial real estate, environmental, business, government, and community leaders to collaborate on innovative zero-emissions solutions. The sold-out, day-long Symposium was a first-of-its-kind event at the Port of Oakland and intended to assemble and educate stakeholders on the Port’s overall goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions. The Symposium included critical and robust discussions on the complex strategies and investments that are essential for achieving net zero emissions in Oakland.
The Symposium highlighted the Port’s commitment to social responsibility and environmental stewardship, and helped cultivate a shared sense of ownership in Oakland’s goal of a zero-emissions future. Through this Symposium, the Port successfully promoted awareness of the challenges and opportunities for creating zero-emissions operations, fostered meaningful connections for future collaboration on zero-emissions projects, and supported educational opportunities for all its stakeholders. The Port provided free entrance for community members to ensure that the event was accessible to all, including disadvantaged communities. Additionally, the Symposium attracted significant news coverage that furthered public awareness about working to find solutions to achieving zero-emissions operations.
