Oakland International is First California Airport to Install Mamava Lactation Suites
OAK MAKES MOVE TO SUPPORT NURSING MOTHERS, ACCESSIBLE TRAVEL
Oakland, CA – March 3, 2016: Those traveling through the Oakland International Airport today will be among the first to see a milestone occasion for mothers, families, and access at the airport. The Port of Oakland and Oakland International Airport are now giving nursing moms a quiet place to pump or breastfeed when they travel. With opening of the new suites, OAK becomes the first California airport to install Mamava Lactation Suites in its terminals.
About three million, or 75%, of new babies born in the United States each year start out breastfeeding. OAK aims to make travel easier for breastfeeding mothers by adding this innovative amenity to our terminals.
Equipped with comfortable seating and an electrical outlet, a Mamava Lactation Suite is a private, lockable suite designed for “nursing mamas on the go.” OAK’s two Mamava Lactation Suites, which are ADA accessible, are conveniently located post-security to serve travelers in Terminals 1 and 2. The Mamava Lactation Suites will be available during all operating hours, except when in use or being serviced.
The suites at Oakland International arrive as the airport recently reported an 8.4% increase in annual passengers with 9 new destinations added in 2015 and 3 more already scheduled for 2016.
Port of Oakland Acting Director of Aviation, Kristi McKenney notes that, “Increased passenger traffic paired with exciting new nonstop flights help demonstrate that our customers are happy and the airport is growing. We are excited to launch nonstop service to London on Norwegian Airlines this May, and amenities such as free parking offers and the Mamava suite help to show why so many people prefer OAK.”
For its part, Vermont-based Mamava is dedicated to transforming the culture of breastfeeding. Mamava Co-Founder Sascha Mayer notes, “We are so pleased that Oakland International is the first California airport to place a Mamava. This clean comfortable place to use a breast pump will help both traveling moms and employees at the airport meet their breastfeeding goals.”

About Mamava
Mamava is a business dedicated to transforming the culture of breastfeeding. Mamava recognizes the reality that in a nation with no federal paid parental leave policy, many mothers who want to breastfeed are doing so by toting around their breast pumps and seeking out private spaces in which to use it. Often times these mothers end up breast pumping in bathrooms and storage closets.
Mamava suites provide a comfortable, clean, and private place for a mother to use a breast pump or nurse an infant. Mamava suites are not designed to hide breastfeeding , but to do just the opposite by raising the profile of this natural human function, and celebrating the realities of the logistics involved in taking on breastfeeding for the many, many mothers who need to be away from their babies.
