Oakland, Calif. – May 3, 2018: Jack London Square hosts a new Cinco De Mayo Festival and dance competition Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. Oakland-based TURFinc presents dance battles along with time-honored folkloric and quebradita dancing.
“It’s going to be an exciting cultural celebration of music, dance and good food at Jack London Square,” said TURFinc founder Johnny Lopez. “Festival goers will experience a unique event that showcases an Oakland urban dance style – turfing – along with traditional Mexican and Latin dance performances.”
The free entertainment includes Banda music, dancing horses, lowrider cars on display and artists painting murals. Game enthusiasts can try a BMX stunt game (digital bike game). Local vendors will offer unique items for sale and a variety of food and beverage for purchase.
Dancers are gearing up for the TURFinc battles, one for seasoned competitors and another for the public. The open style public competition allows poppin, bboy, krumping, turfing, boogaloo and more. Participants are to sign up before 1:30 p.m. at the TURFinc booth ($10 registration fee; winner receives a prize).
