Oakland, Calif. – May 23, 2018: Jack London Square is hosting one of the longest running and largest yo-yo contests in the country. The Bay Area Classic yo-yo championship is Saturday. The regional competition is expected to draw more than 2,000 spectators throughout the day.
“Some of the most skilled yo-yo players in the world will battle for a cash prize and title this Saturday,” said organizer John Steel, a retired world champion yoyoer. “We chose Jack London Square for the contest venue because it’s a busy location and allows for more kids and adults to see how much fun this sport can be.”
Approximately 50-60 yoyoers will enter the contest. All ages are welcome. Sign-ups are on line in advance of the competition by midnight tonight.
This family-friendly event is celebrating its 21st anniversary at the Oakland waterfront, May 26, and is free and open to the public from 10 am to 5 pm. Food and beverages are available for purchase and there are fine-dining options at the Square.
According to Steel, following the regionals, the nationals are scheduled for June with the world yo-yo championship anticipated in late August in China.

The event runs concurrently with the Norcal Session Fest at the Square from 1 pm to 5 pm where more than 30 local craft brewers show off their skills with a variety of session beers. All proceeds from the Session Fest benefit the bicycle advocacy work of Bike East Bay.
