Jack London Square free exhibit highlights local Beat Generation artists

Oakland, Calif. – Feb. 28, 2019: Several local, prominent, African American artists’ works are highlighted in a new, free exhibit at Jack London Square that opens today for the public at 1 p.m.

“The-Beat-Generation-Exhibition” features a representative collection of art, by Abstract Expressionist Arthur Monroe. The display demonstrates Mr. Monroe’s lifetime artistic achievement in preparation for his induction to the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. The gallery opening also incorporates works from other local, prominent, African American artists including Evangeline EJ Montgomery, Lewis Watts, Mary “Lovelace” O’Neal, and Raymond Holbert.

Mr. Monroe’s son, Cultural Arts Producer Alistair Monroe, curated the exhibit that is open to the public Wednesdays through Sundays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., for an extended stay. The art show, in partnership with Visit Oakland, is at 54 Washington Street in Jack London Square between Embarcadero and Water Street.
