Oakland, CA – (Sept. 26, 2016): Officials at Oakland International Airport (OAK) said today that the Airport has now marked its 33rd consecutive month of passenger traffic growth. The busy end-of-summer travel month of August culminated in a 6.3% increase over the same period in 2015.
The upturn represents a total of 1,110,385 passengers served at the airport during the month – 68,207 more than in August 2015.
“We are working hard to ensure that Oakland is the choice airport for travelers both to and from the Bay Area,” said Director of Aviation, Bryant L. Francis. “The summer welcomed many exciting additions to OAK’s offerings, including new service to both Reno/Tahoe, NV and Long Beach, CA. Additionally, four new international markets were announced, with nonstop service beginning next year. We look forward to seeing how the new service and other exciting developments will contribute to our ongoing upward trend.”
On September 8th at Oakland’s Jack London Square, Norwegian Air announced new service to Copenhagen, Denmark and Barcelona, Spain – the 5th and 6th European destinations at OAK. The Barcelona service will represent the Bay Area’s only nonstop flight to Spain. In May, the airline launched nonstop service between OAK and London. Also this summer, Southwest Airlines announced its first-ever nonstop international service from the Bay Area, to be operated at OAK. Daily nonstop service to both Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos, Mexico will begin in February 2017.
By all indications, passenger activity will continue to be strong through the end of 2016 and continue into 2017 with these exciting new international air service announcements. OAK continues to modernize Terminal 1, including the expansion of the International Arrivals Building. These projects will allow the airport to better serve its arriving and departing customers.
