Environmental Stewardship

We Are Part of the Solution

The Port of Oakland’s maritime and airport facilities and commercial real estate are public resources. As such, the Port is committed to being environmentally sustainable. Environmental stewardship isn’t just about protecting shoreland properties, wildlife habitat, and public parks. It encompasses all issues related to the challenges of sustainability. We carefully study all of the impacts of a thriving economy to mitigate unintended negative impacts, including pollution (air, water, noise), climate resiliency, and infrastructure wear and tear. As a result, dozens of innovative programs have emerged thanks to an array of creative, problem-centered partnerships and collaborations that work to identify, quantify, and meet these challenges. And, these same environmental interventions can be applied worldwide to help save energy, conserve precious, finite natural resources, and reduce our carbon footprint for future generations.

For many years, the Port has implemented various programs to reduce emissions and improve air quality. More recently, the Port’s focus has transitioned to achieving zero-emissions operations. To advance our bold objectives, to date the Port has applied for (and received) multiple grants, contributed its own funds, and partnered with its tenants and customers to leverage private funding for zero-emissions projects.

Zero Emissions Symposium

The Port and Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, held Oakland’s first environmental symposium. The event brought together maritime, aviation, commercial real estate, environmental, business, government, and community leaders to collaborate on innovative zero-emissions solutions.
