Sustainability & Climate Resiliency
The Port of Oakland (Port) looks for sustainability opportunities for all its projects and operations. Port leadership created a Sustainability Policy in the early 2000’s to promote the consideration of sustainability features, such as solar energy, water recycling, and reuse of materials, into its planning, management, development, and operations. In collaboration with business and community partners and other Port stakeholders, this has resulted in significant programs to protect the environment, reduce emissions, and save resources.
Climate resiliency is at the forefront of protecting shoreline communities and businesses around the world. Climate change is projected to increase or raise sea level rise, storm intensity and groundwater levels. The Port is studying future vulnerabilities and partnering with neighboring communities, adjacent cities, and other local agencies to develop and implement adaptation projects that address these concerns.

Maritime Air Quality
Improving air quality is a strategic priority for the Port of Oakland. The Seaport Air Quality 2020 and Beyond Plan is the Port’s master plan for achieving its vision of a zero-emissions Seaport.
Airport Air Quality

Sea Level Rise
Oakland International Airport’s (OAK) Perimeter Dike improvement project has been completed, which protects its primary commercial runway from storm surge. The Port also works with its neighboring cities to cooperate on projects, studies and funding to address flooding and sea level rise.
Sustainability
The Port Sustainability Policy promotes the use of sustainability features, such as solar energy, water recycling, and reuse of materials, into its planning, management, development, and operations. In FY 2025, the Port will develop its Sustainability Management Plan that will provide a roadmap for reducing resource consumption, implementing further greenhouse gas emission reductions, and building environmental resiliency.
