Oakland, Calif.– December 20, 2016: The Port of Oakland reported today that its Jack London Square has attracted a record three million visitors in 2016. The result, calculated by property manager CIM Group, makes the Square one of the Bay Area’s busiest destinations.
“We’re gratified by the popularity of Jack London Square as a center for celebration,” said Port of Oakland Commercial Real Estate Director Pamela Kershaw. “And we’re grateful for the vision of tenants who give our millions of guests reason to be here.”
The Port said 2016 visitor totals topped the previous high of approximately 2.5 million guests. It said Oakland’s improving economy and reputation as a tourist destination stimulated Jack London Square visits. The Port also said record turnout at its waterfront showcase reflected the Square’s multiuse character:
- About 1.75 million visitors attended 55 free events including the autumn food festival Eat Real.
- Nearly 590,000 ferry riders came to Jack London Square to cross the San Francisco Bay on ferry boats.
- Thousands more worked at the Square’s office buildings, ate in its restaurants, or sailed out of its marinas.
Jack London Square stretches for six blocks at the foot of Broadway along the Oakland Estuary. It’s a centerpiece of the Port’s real estate business. Tenants include renowned lifestyle publisher Sunset Inc.
Two, free events, the annual holiday tree lighting ceremony and the 40th annual lighted yacht parade on the Oakland Estuary, drew thousands to the Square this month.
