New, free, ferry service connects Jack London Square and Alameda Landing
Oakland, Calif. – July 16, 2024: The Port of Oakland, along with the CIM Group which manages Jack London Square, the City of Alameda, the Alameda Transportation Management Association, and the San Francisco Bay Ferry, announce a new, free, ferry service connecting Oakland and Alameda. The Oakland Alameda Water Shuttle (OAWS) launches Wednesday, July 17, 2024.
The water shuttle, a 45-foot yellow pontoon vessel named Woodstock, will carry people across the Oakland Estuary, Wednesday through Sunday, for the next two years. It will offer 37 trips per day that take under 10 minutes. The free shuttle is ADA accessible, and bicycles are welcome.
The Oakland Alameda Water Shuttle will operate between public docks at the foot of Broadway in the heart of Oakland’s Jack London Square and Bohol Circle Immigrant Park, at the foot of 5th Street in Alameda, near shopping at Alameda Landing.
This pilot program is a public-private partnership, funded partially by the Port of Oakland, designed to help people move easily and sustainably between Oakland and Alameda without driving.
“We are excited to partner on this new, free, transit service that connects the Oakland and Alameda waterfronts and allows for enhanced visitor access to Jack London Square,” said Port of Oakland Chief Real Estate Officer Jonathan Veach. “One strategy to help activate Jack London Square is to ensure connections to our surrounding communities and this initiative does that while also helping to take vehicles off local roadways.”
The San Francisco Bay Ferry will run the OAWS Woodstock, and the first ride on the OAWS will depart the Oakland dock at 7:00 AM on Wednesday, July 17.
