Oakland International Airport: a Touchdown for Travelers’ Super Bowl Access
OAK’s Central Location is a Winner in Regional Super Bowl Celebration
Oakland, CA – January 29, 2016: Super Bowl 50 is just around the corner, and Oakland International Airport is literally right in the middle of it all. The Bay Area is bubbling with excitement about hosting one of the world’s most exciting sporting events, and is using the opportunity to show off the entire San Francisco Bay Area, with official events happening all over the region.
The Big Game will be played at Levi’s Stadium in the city of Santa Clara on February 7, 2016, preceded by a weeklong series of public events held throughout the Bay Area. The Super Bowl City fan village, the NFL Experience, and the Media Center will be hosted in San Francisco. Many travelers may not know that while the stadium is located 30 miles south of Oakland, Super Bowl City and San Francisco are located 20 miles in the opposite direction, with Oakland at the midpoint. Oakland International Airport is ideally positioned with convenient BART rail transit access, and trains leaving every 5-6 minutes.
Commercial travelers into Oakland can expect flights to be full at peak periods during game week. For those traveling from Denver, the Airport is connected with 4 daily nonstop flights offered by Southwest Airlines. Panther fans in the Carolinas are connected through multiple itineraries as well. Visit www.iflyoak.com and www.flyoakland.com to connect to airline and flight information.
OAK will be the number one destination for corporate jet traffic in the Bay Area. The FAA has designated an air traffic control “slot allocation system” to accommodate the expected increase around Super Bowl.
OAK’s fixed base operators, KaiserAir and Landmark Aviation, are already taking great care of customers using their facilities at OAK. NetJets, a Columbus, Ohio, company offering fractional ownership and private business jet rentals, will be setting up temporary facilities for its customers at OAK in the Oakland Maintenance Center (OMC) facility hangar to accommodate the additional jet activity. The OMC facilities will operate for one week, from Tuesday, February 2, through Monday, February 8.
With the countdown steadily drawing us toward game day, the teams are now confirmed, and the welcome signs are up at the airport, lining the North Field corridor to welcome corporate and general aviation customers. Traditional flyers at OAK can get in the spirit by visiting the Super Bowl memorabilia pop-up store in Terminal 2. With the influx of air traffic, the Super Bowl is expected to be good for OAK as well as for the airport area businesses, particularly as it comes during a typically slower travel period of the year.
Acting Aviation Director, Kristi McKenney, welcomes the added boost, noting, “The airport has enjoyed sustained growth over recent years, and is now the fastest growing airport in California (on a percentage basis). An event like the Super Bowl is the perfect chance to show the flying public why people love our airport so much. There is so much here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Centrally located and easy to access, Oakland International is the best way for travelers to reach it all.”
As such, the New York Times agrees, listing the East Bay as the only California destination to visit this year. We highly recommend it as well, flying into OAK, of course.
