Oakland surpasses 1 million passengers in May

Oakland, CA:  (June 30, 2018) – Officials at Oakland International Airport today released May traffic reports, which indicate that total passengers at the airport increased 4.1%, from 1,140,821 in May 2017, to 1,187,120 passengers in May this year. The increase is based upon 1.7% more flight operations and 4.8% more seats.  International traffic volume of 91,197 increased 42% based on 31% more operations than last year.

As indicated by these strong traffic numbers, OAK is experiencing one of the busiest summer travel seasons on record.  The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) expects to screen more than 28 million passengers over the course of this July 4th holiday period, which extends from June 28th through July 9th.

“Port of Oakland Director of Aviation, Bryant L. Francis said, “We are pleased to see our passenger volume continue to grow, representing confidence from both our customers and airline partners. Our new short and long-haul operations have been received very well, and additional routes to be introduced in the coming weeks.”

With the summer travel season underway, travelers are also now in the midst of the July 4th holiday travel period, with more people choosing to fly the East Bay way during what is being called the busiest summer for travel on record.

Travel Smart, Arrive Early
In light of the expected boost in travelers combined with recent delays at security checkpoints at airports across the country, OAK encourages travelers to prepare to enjoy this holiday weekend by arriving early for departures. For the best experience traveling through OAK this busy travel season, we suggest following TSA guidelines to get you through the Airport and to your destination.

TSA recommends arriving up to 2 hours early for domestic flights and 3 hours for international destinations this Holiday weekend.
