Oakland, CA: (May 25, 2018) — This Memorial Day holiday weekend kicks off what is expected to be a record summer travel season across the nation. At Oakland International Airport (OAK), traffic is also expected to surge due to new domestic and international destinations and increased frequencies to select existing destinations.
The Memorial Day holiday constitutes the unofficial launch of summer travel. OAK expects to welcome approximately 165,000 travelers over the four-day weekend beginning today, Friday, May 25th, through Monday, May 28th. For the month of May, the airport expects to continue its upward passenger volume trend, and will offer 3% more seats than in May 2017.
New flights across the country and around the globe are driving stronger holiday traffic at OAK, including new nonstop service to Paris and Rome on Norwegian Air, and new long-haul domestic routes announced or introduced earlier this year:
Crescent City, CA: Contour Air | San Antonio: Southwest (begins 7/8/18) |
Dallas-Fort Worth: American | Minneapolis/St. Paul: Southwest (begins 7/15/18) |
Indianapolis: Southwest (begins 7/15/18) | New York-Newark: Southwest |
Memphis: Allegiant (begins 5/30/18) | Orlando: Southwest (begins 7/15/18) |
Travel Smart, Arrive Early In light of the expected boost in travelers, and in preparation for smooth travel experiences, OAK encourages holiday weekend travelers to arrive early for departures. We suggest following TSA guidelines, which recommend arriving up to 2 hours early for domestic flights and 3 hours early for international destinations this holiday weekend.
Get Expedited Screening TSA PreCheck® is an expedited screening program that enables low-risk travelers to enjoy a smart and efficient screening experience. For TSA PreCheck® travelers, there is no need to remove shoes, 3-1-1 liquids, laptops, light outerwear or belts.
